what do pharaoh ants look like?
Worker pharaoh ants are small, measuring between 1.5-2mm, while queens can grow up to 4mm. They have two nodes connecting their thorax and abdomen, along with a stinger—though it is rarely visible and seldom used. Their bodies are yellow to light brown, with slightly darker abdomens featuring faint black markings. With their almost translucent appearance, they naturally blend into many surfaces, making them difficult to spot. Because of this, an infestation can often go unnoticed until it becomes a larger problem.
Where do Pharaoh ants nest?
​Pharaoh ants thrive in warm, humid environments and prefer to nest in hidden areas such as wall voids, behind appliances, and along baseboards. Since they are so small can also nest in electrical circuits, internet ports, or in potted plants. While they often establish nests near food or water sources, they are not limited to these areas. These tiny ants can easily travel throughout entire buildings by using electrical and telephone wiring, hot water pipes, plumbing, or any small cracks and crevices they can squeeze through.
What do they eat?
Pharaoh ants are especially drawn to foods rich in protein, sugar, fat, and grease. Their diet typically includes meats, dead insects, fruits, and syrup, but they are also known to consume unsanitary materials such as soiled diapers and used bandages. Once they locate a food source, they leave behind a chemical trail that guides other ants directly to it. This is why you may see them forming orderly lines around uncovered food.
